As an ancient peril threatens both Vikings and dragons on the island of Berk, Hiccup, an imaginative Viking, and Toothless, a Night Fury dragon, form a bond that will help both species forge a new future.

Synopsis:

Berk is a village where a tribe of Vikings live. One of the Vikings is 15-year-old Hiccup, who is the son of the village chieftain Stoick. Sadly, it is determined that Hiccup lacks the strength to repel the dragons attacking the community. Under the guidance of Gobber, the local blacksmith, Hiccup builds machinery rather than engage in combat. During a dragon raid, Hiccup shoots down an incredibly rare dragon with a contraption he developed called the Bolas Launcher. People do not think Hiccup shot it down, which is unfortunate. Despite his resolve to kill it, Hiccup is unable to get the courage to enter the woodland. The dragon decides not to kill Hiccup even though he is pinned to the ground.

Hiccup’s father, Stoick, enrolls his son in a dragon combat class with Fishlegs, Snotlout, Ruffnut, Tuffnut, and Astrid after he departs on a mission to destroy the dragon’s nest. Hiccup develops feelings for Astrid. Unfortunately, Hiccup fails the course, and when he goes to the jungle, he finds his dragon cannot fly since his bolas tore off half of its tail fin. Because of its retractable teeth, Hiccup lovingly calls the dragon Toothless, and the two become very close. With Hiccup on his back, Toothless can fly once more when Hiccup creates a saddle and an artificial tail wing.

To the astonishment of his classmates, Toothless shows Hiccup how to defeat every other dragon. Astrid is jealous of all the attention Hiccup is getting, which is bad for Hiccup. After failing to kill a dragon with his army, Stoick sends Hiccup out to kill one himself to pass his final exam. He and Toothless try to escape after discovering this, but Astrid finds the dragon and Hiccup flies her on Toothless to demonstrate that he is a kind dragon. A larger red death dragon hypnotizes Toothless in midair by urging the lesser ones to go feed it to save themselves from being devoured. When Astrid realizes that the dragons are going to invade Berk, she wants to go back home and warn them, but Hiccup chooses to keep Toothless safe instead.

In an attempt to demonstrate that dragons may be friendly, Hiccup attempts to control a captured enormous dragon for his final exam, but to no avail. Toothless arrives to assist Hiccup when he sees that he is in danger, but he is caught in the act. Stoick, who is angry with his son, disowns Hiccup for making friends with a dragon. During the altercation, Hiccup inadvertently divulges that Toothless is aware of the location of the dragon’s nest. Toothless leads the way as Stoick makes his way to the nest. Hiccup’s courage is finally restored when Astrid explains that he spared Toothless out of compassion and that he is not weak. After teaching his peers how to make friends with their dragon, Hiccup sets off to pursue Stoick and his army.

When Hiccup and his crew come on the training dragons and divert the red death—while Hiccup tries to free Toothless—the Vikings are extremely alarmed. Stoick and the Vikings arrive at the dragons’ nest and awaken the red death. Stoick takes back control of his son and expresses regret to Hiccup and Toothless for his foolish decision. After a hard-fought combat, Toothless and Hiccup can destroy the Red Death’s wing, which explodes as it falls to the ground. Hiccup almost escapes the explosion before being tossed off Toothless and saved by his dragon companion, but he loses his left foot in the process.

When Hiccup awakens in Berk after some time, he finds dragons prowling the hamlet. Gobber declares that he has made a new prosthesis for Toothless and Hiccup. Everyone in the town now thinks well of Hiccup, and Astrid moves in to kiss him. Berk turns into a town where dragons and humans can coexist together.
